Refinery Crisis Pushes Gas and Diesel to Historic Highs
Amerikalılar pompa başında tarihin en pahalı Ağustos'uyla karşı karşıya kalırken, benzin fiyatlarının **$4.07** ve motorinin **$5.40** ile rekor kırma

Americans are facing the most expensive August ever at the pump, with regular gas hitting $4.07 and diesel reaching $5.40 a gallon, signaling that the surge is driven not merely by crude oil costs but by a critical collapse in global refining capacity.
Historic Collapse in Global Refining Capacity
The primary dynamic driving prices higher is the structural contraction on the supply side. According to S&P Global, the world is currently grappling with a loss of 7.5 million barrels per day of refining capacity. The key drivers of this situation include:Russia halted its diesel exports for a month in July, a pause that has now been extended until the end of the year. This move has forced the US to deplete its inventories to cover the global demand gap.
US Inventories Deplete as Inflationary Pressure Mounts
US diesel inventories have fallen 10% below the five-year average, according to data from the Energy Information Administration. This inventory depletion has driven wholesale prices and pump prices to historic levels. For gas and diesel averages to fall below monthly records, prices would need to drop by 8 cents and 40 cents respectively, a scenario deemed impossible under current supply conditions. This loss of refining capacity blocks potential declines in crude oil prices from translating to lower fuel costs. As refining margins (crack spreads) approach record highs, the risk of energy inflation becoming persistent is strengthening.
Maintenance Season Could Squeeze Markets Further
Another concern for markets is the upcoming fall maintenance season. While refiners might consider postponing maintenance to capture record profits, announcements from major players like Shell indicating a drop in refinery utilization this quarter suggest supply pressures will continue. With inventories continuing to fall, prices are expected to remain elevated, sustaining upward pressure on inflation. While markets might attempt to price this structural supply constraint as a transitory shock, the record levels in refining margins (crack spreads) signal that inflation is set to become stickier. This persistent rise in energy costs acts as a tax on consumer spending, suggesting that the Federal Reserve will maintain a hawkish stance, putting continued pressure on global liquidity. I view elevated energy prices as a prime trigger for a potential risk-off scenario.
