Ağustos Nymex doğal gaz kontratları (NGQ26), ABD'de beklenen sıcak hava dalgasının elektrik santrallerindeki talebi artıracağı beklentisiyle günü **%2
August Nymex natural gas futures (NGQ26) closed sharply higher by +2.09% on Wednesday, as forecasts for hotter US weather are poised to boost demand from power generators for increased air-conditioning usage. The price action extends beyond short-term weather patterns, bolstered by structural fragilities in the global supply chain.
Heatwave Forecasts Ignite Power Demand Surge
The Commodity Weather Group shifted its forecasts hotter, projecting above-average temperatures across the Central US from July 27-31. This surge in cooling demand is driving natural gas consumption higher. According to the Edison Electric Institute, US electricity output for the week ending July 18 rose +2.0% year-over-year to 101,391 GWh.Gulf Coast Storm Risks and Export Headwinds
Limiting the upside momentum is the threat posed by Tropical Storm Bertha, which risks disrupting LNG export facilities along the US Gulf Coast. Such a disruption could reduce exports and swell domestic supplies. However, data from BNEF shows estimated LNG net flows to export terminals rose +7.9% week-over-week to 17.9 bcf/day, underscoring strong overseas demand.Global Supply Tightness from Qatar Crisis
A significant medium-term support factor is the extensive damage reported at the world's largest natural gas export facility, Ras Laffan Industrial City. Qatar's disclosure that Iranian attacks damaged 17% of Ras Laffan's export capacity—with repairs expected to take 3 to 5 years—could severely tighten global LNG supply. Given that Ras Laffan accounts for about 20% of global LNG supply, this reduction is a bullish catalyst for US export potential.Production and Inventory Dynamics
The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) has raised its 2026 dry gas production forecast to 111.2 bcf/day, signaling bearish pressure from increased output. On Wednesday, dry gas production in the Lower-48 states rose +2.5% year-over-year to 110.9 bcf/day, while demand increased +6.3% y/y to 80.6 bcf/day. The consensus for Thursday's EIA inventory report is an injection of +29 bcf, hovering near the five-year average. From my perspective at the EM desk, the US heatwave is merely creating seasonal volatility. The strategic focal point is the capacity loss at Qatar's Ras Laffan facility and the resulting global supply deficit. This dynamic threatens to drive up import costs for LNG-dependent Emerging Markets in Asia, potentially reigniting inflationary pressures. For US producers, this signals the onset of a potentially lucrative structural export cycle.
