Kayseri Beet Growers Cooperative Chairman Hüseyin Akay highlighted that natural sugar consumption has fallen short of planned levels over the past two years, primarily due to a pronounced rise in starch‑based sugar and chemical sweetener imports. This influx erodes the market share of domestic beet producers and threatens price stability.
Kayseri Sugar's Strategic Statement and Producers' Demands
Kayseri Sugar Board Chairman Harun Halıcı used the Ordinary General Assembly held at the 15 July Martyrs Conference Hall to bring sectoral challenges to the table. Akay reminded that natural sugar supports families in 58 provinces, emphasizing that neglecting this critical rural sector yields both economic and social repercussions. The company is calling for policy revisions to align production costs with fair pricing.
Policy‑Driven Solutions Needed
Although production quotas set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry remain, a mismatch between consumption forecasts and reality has led to a sugar surplus. Drawing on its 70‑year legacy, Kayseri Sugar proposes the following measures to mitigate the impact of imported chemical sweeteners:
