A rail derailment in East Sussex on August 13 resulted in 30 injuries and the derailment of a train. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) published an image showing that the track near Lewes had buckled due to high temperatures before the incident. The UK was experiencing its fifth heatwave at the time of the derailment, with temperatures reaching 27°C on the day of the accident. The affected railway section between Lewes and Haywards Heath will remain closed until at least August 26. The primary issue was identified as the clay-based embankment being sensitive to moisture changes, with evidence of prior movement. RAIB released CCTV footage showing a 'track geometry irregularity' before the derailment. A second derailment occurred the next day near Wickford, involving a Greater Anglia train, with no injuries reported. Rail operators acknowledged the impact on passengers, local communities, and railway staff, emphasizing that safety remains their top priority. The incidents have raised concerns about rail safety, particularly in extreme heat conditions, prompting further investigation and potential policy changes.
Markets may interpret these derailments as a warning sign about rail safety vulnerabilities in high temperatures, potentially leading to stricter regulations and maintenance standards in the industry.
