SAP Eases Customer Transition to Avoid EU Antitrust Fine

EU antitrust regulators announced that SAP, Europe's largest software maker, will make it easier for customers to switch to rival service providers or terminate contracts as part of concessions to avoid a potential fine. The move includes offering an alternative license fee calculation method and eliminating reinstatement fees, while reducing back maintenance charges for returning customers under a 10-year global agreement.
The European Commission launched an investigation in September last year over concerns that SAP was hindering competition in the on-premise software maintenance and support services market. Following feedback from third parties, SAP adjusted its proposal, leading regulators to approve the concessions. Teresa Ribera, EU antitrust chief, stated: 'This decision gives customers using SAP's popular on-premises business management software more freedom to choose maintenance and support services without unfair restrictions that raised costs and stifled competition.'
SAP's commitments aim to provide clarity, choice, and safeguards for customers managing complex on-premise environments. This development could reshape competitive dynamics in the technology services sector, particularly for legacy enterprise software ecosystems.
