As rising temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns put Asia’s water-intensive rice farming under pressure, Saudi Aramco’s venture capital arm, Aramco Ventures, has led a $9.5 million investment round in Mitti Labs, a climate-tech startup headquartered in New York and Bengaluru aiming to bolster water resilience across the continent.
Venture Capital Flows into Agricultural Transformation
This Series A round marks the first investment by Aramco Ventures in an Indian startup, signaling a strategic pivot for the energy giant into carbon markets and climate technology. The round saw participation from existing backer Lightspeed India, alongside Godrej Industries Group, Cisco, Francis Family Fund, and Volta Circle. With this latest funding, Mitti Labs’ total raised capital reaches $12.5 million.AI and Satellite Imagery to Curb Methane Emissions
Rice, the staple food for more than half the world’s population, is notoriously water-intensive and a significant source of agricultural methane emissions. Mitti Labs addresses this by integrating Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery from commercial and public satellites with proprietary field datasets in a proprietary GeoAI platform.Expansion into Southeast Asian Compliance Markets
With the fresh capital, Mitti Labs plans to launch operations in the Philippines later this year, expanding into Indonesia and other Southeast Asian markets by 2027. This move will allow the startup to serve compliance carbon markets in addition to the voluntary markets it currently operates in, adapting its model to diverse farming ecosystems. The extension of Saudi Arabia's fossil fuel giant into agricultural technology on the Indian subcontinent is not merely a financial play; it is a sophisticated geopolitical risk management strategy. Aramco is establishing a new foothold in climate finance and food security assets as the energy transition becomes inevitable. As water crises deepen in Asia, the strategic value of such technological solutions could rival that of traditional resources. This move underscores how energy companies are diversifying their portfolios into data and carbon assets, positioning themselves within the future economy of sustainability.
