Taco Bell Lettuce Outbreak: The Cyclospora Supply Chain Crisis

Iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in five U.S. states has been linked to an estimated 7,000 cyclospora cases nationwide. The CDC has identified Taylor Farms' Mexican-sourced lettuce as a potential origin, though only 1,600 of the sick reported eating at Taco Bell. Michigan alone accounted for 4,300 cases, with lettuce and bagged greens flagged as major risk factors. Cyclospora, which causes explosive diarrhea, can be prevented by heating to 158°F or freezing, but live produce poses higher contamination risks. The contaminated lettuce also supplied chains like Walmart, Target, and Chipotle, exposing vulnerabilities in the broader supply chain.
