Trillion-Dollar Fund Managers Enter the Crypto Arena: The 'Short the Bankers' Era Is Over
Finans dünyasının efsanevi söylemi olan "uzun vadeli Bitcoin, kısa vadeli bankerler" (long bitcoin, short the bankers) stratejisi resmen tarih olurken

The legendary financial mantra of "long bitcoin, short the bankers" is officially history as traditional finance giants embrace digital assets, rewriting the rules of the market. This summer, two massive financial institutions, each managing more than $1 trillion in investor savings, approved crypto products, demonstrating that large firms are expanding crypto access even amidst a bear market.
A Trillion-Dollar Paradigm Shift
Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley highlighted this turning point in an interview with CoinDesk, stating, "This year everyone just put on the crypto jersey. Everyone works for crypto now." According to Horsley, two major financial institutions looked at this space during a bear market and declared, "We want to make this available to our clients."The Digitalization of Banking
Fabian Dori, Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at Sygnum, agreed that the relationship between banks and crypto has fundamentally changed, declaring the old "long bitcoin, short the bankers" trade dead. Banks have moved from resisting digital assets to building and enabling them through custody, tokenization, and regulated trading. Dori attributes this shift to client demand and clearer rules, calling it structural rather than cyclical.Early bank entrants included Swissquote, which added Bitcoin trading in 2017, DBS in 2020, and BBVA in 2021. BNY Mellon started institutional crypto custody in 2022, the same year Nubank launched Bitcoin and Ether trading and LGT added crypto services. St.Galler Kantonalbank and Santander followed in 2023, while Zürcher Kantonalbank added retail trading in 2024, preceding other major players like Standard Chartered, Charles Schwab, SoFi, and Morgan Stanley.
The Convergence of Two Worlds into One Finance
Anchorage Digital CEO Nathan McCauley noted that its client roster has increasingly reflected the convergence of traditional and decentralized finance (DeFi) over the past two years. While large financial firms are partnering with specialist providers rather than building their own infrastructure, the emergence of real-world assets (RWA) on-chain and crypto wrappers created by large asset managers shows the two worlds are becoming one. "We’re quickly headed towards a world where there isn’t ‘traditional finance’ and ‘decentralized finance.’ There’s just ‘finance,’" McCauley told CoinDesk. However, this expansion has not altered crypto's dependence on market prices. Fabian Dori of Sygnum warned, "What has not changed is the market’s character. Institutionalization has added a layer of infrastructure on top of crypto’s reflexive, narrative-driven trading rather than replacing it."
The entry of trillion-dollar asset managers signals the end of the experimental phase for digital assets. With regulatory frameworks like MiCA in Europe solidifying and the SEC providing pathways for ETFs in the US, compliance is no longer a barrier but a competitive advantage. We are witnessing a structural integration where custody and tokenization become standard banking services.
