Nokia's AI-RAN Surge: The U.S. 6G Leadership Play

Nokia (NYSE: NOK), once known as a smartphone manufacturer, has seen its stock surge by 130% over the past year. This rally isn't driven by traditional phone sales but by a little-known technology: AI-RAN (Artificial Intelligence Radio Access Networks). Nokia's Q1 report showed only 4% year-over-year revenue growth, but its AI and cloud segment grew 49%. This reflects increased demand for optical networking hardware in AI data centers. However, the real opportunity lies in AI-RAN, which helps tech giants overcome AI data center latency limitations and enables micro-data centers for real-time AI inference. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called AI-RAN a 'generational shift' for telecommunications, asserting that the U.S. must embrace it to maintain global leadership. In October, Nvidia invested $1 billion in Nokia to support the telecom sector's transition to AI-native 5G-advanced and 6G networks. AI-RAN is poised to handle real-time workloads better than AI model training, which is growing 49% faster. Nokia's Q1 release noted customer trials will begin this year, with 10 committed partners. This technology could replicate Nvidia's 2009 chip revolution, albeit at 1/100th the scale.
The AI-RAN breakthrough could trigger another stock surge for Nokia, as the U.S. seeks to dominate 6G networks. Nvidia's backing of this technology strengthens Nokia's long-term position in the AI infrastructure race.
