More than a border crossing, Habur serves as a critical logistics node along the historic Silk Road. Minister Bolat stressed that the gate is one of Turkey's foremost portals for both export and import flows.

Capacity Expansion and Key Metrics

The customs upgrade increased the number of platforms from 24 to 32, substantially boosting processing capacity. Daily averages observed over the last six months:

■2,500 commercial vehicle entries and exits (first 22 days of July)

■1,409 commercial vehicles, 535 passenger cars and 4,098 passengers entering (H1 2026)

■1,468 commercial vehicles, 568 passenger cars and 4,385 passengers exiting (H1 2026)

Strategic Re‑shaping of the Middle East Logistics Network

Bolat projected that trade volume with Iraq, which stood at $14.5 billion last year, will rise further with the new Iraqi government in place. Following the Gulf War, Saudi Arabia's reopening of transit visas enables Turkish haulers to expedite routes through Iraq‑Kuwait‑Saudi Arabia.

Outlook for Turkey‑Iraq Trade

The minister emphasized that the completion of ASYCADA integration and banking‑customs synchronization will propel trade toward "bright, high‑value figures." These infrastructure upgrades also lay the groundwork for the revival of regional energy corridors such as the Kirkuk‑Ceyhan Pipeline.

Market participants view the capacity uplift at Habur and the reopening of regional transit visas as a recalibration of Middle‑East‑to‑Europe trade flows. In particular, the energy and logistics sectors may see a positive impact on FX rates and trade balances.
