Treasury Selloff Exposes Fed's Fragile Credibility as Yields Surge to 19-Year Highs
Amerikan Hazine tahvillerindeki sert satış dalgası, Federal Reserve'in enflasyonla mücadele konusundaki "kredibilitesinin" sorgulandığı kritik bir dön
The brutal selloff in U.S. Treasuries has signaled a critical juncture for the Federal Reserve's inflation-fighting "credibility," prompting St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem to declare that interest rate increases are essential to restore the central bank's standing, as told to the Financial Times.
The Case for Incremental Action
Musalem warned that a wait-and-see approach carries significant risks, arguing that "earlier, incremental, gradual interest-rate action" is far less costly and disruptive than the alternative of delayed, massive, and abrupt hikes later. Although the Fed left rates unchanged at this week's policy meeting, Musalem revealed he had expressed a preference for a 0.25 percentage point increase during the discussions.
30-Year Yields Hit a 19-Year Peak
Market volatility intensified following the rate decision and hints from Fed chief Kevin Warsh that the central bank might reconsider its inflation goal posts. This uncertainty helped push 30-year Treasury yields above 5.2%, marking the highest level in 19 years. The decision to hold rates drew dissent from 3 of the 12 FOMC members, who explicitly advocated for an immediate quarter-point hike.
Dr. Yaman Ege Analysis: This macroeconomic tightening poses a significant, indirect strain on the technology supply chain. Long-term rates breaching the 5.2% threshold effectively raise the cost of capital for capital-intensive sectors. For semiconductor giants like TSMC and equipment leaders like ASML, financing next-generation foundries becomes exponentially more expensive. Consequently, high-flying tech stocks like Nvidia face intensified valuation pressure. The Fed's battle for credibility is intrinsically linked to the battle for affordable capital access in the tech sector.
