The U.S. Department of Commerce has imposed a 100% tariff on drones weighing over 25 kg or with thermal imaging capabilities, and a 25% tariff on smaller, less sensitive models and components, citing national security concerns. The EU, Japan, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff, while the UK will see a 10% rate. The measures will take effect on September 3, with non-sensitive components subject to the tariffs after 180 days. The U.S. has also granted the Commerce Department authority to create an investment program to incentivize domestic drone production.
The move is seen as a response to competitors like China and Russia attempting to enter the U.S. market. The tariffs could disrupt global supply chains in the drone industry while bolstering the U.S.'s push for domestic manufacturing.
