Palas Lake Salt Harvest Disrupted by Rainfall: 2,000 Tons of Salt Lost for Local Economy
Tuzla Palas Gölü'nde geleneksel olarak her yıl temmuz- ağustos ayları arasında çıkarılan tuz, bu yıl yoğun yağışlar nedeniyle oluşmadığı için yöre hal
The traditional salt harvest from Palas Lake in Tuzla, which typically occurs in July and August, has been disrupted this year due to heavy rainfall. The lake, which has been a source of salt for 41 years, has seen salt production cease due to excessive rainfall and insufficient evaporation. Locals, who previously harvested around 2,000 tons of salt annually, are now facing a significant economic loss. Families harvest salt to meet their own needs, while around 50 people commercially extract salt for sale to neighboring villages. This year, the high water levels have also attracted migratory birds, adding another layer of environmental impact. Locals express hope that salt production will resume next year, but the current disruption highlights the vulnerability of small-scale industries to weather-related disruptions.
The incident underscores the broader economic challenges faced by Turkey's non-farm employment sector, where such disruptions can have cascading effects on local livelihoods.
