U.S. Treasury's $3 Billion Daily Interest Tab and the Strategic Yen Rescue
Kongre Bütçe Ofisi'nin (CBO) son raporu, Washington'daki mali disiplin krizini çıplak bir tabloyla ortaya koyuyor: ABD Hazinesi, devasa ulusal borcunu

A new report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) lays bare the escalating fiscal crisis in Washington: amidst a nearly $40 trillion national debt, the U.S. Treasury is now bleeding over $3 billion daily in interest payments alone. Between October 2025 and July 2026, net interest payments surged to $963 billion, marking a 14% increase compared to the previous year. Driven by a swelling debt stock and rising long-term rates, the deficit is projected to balloon to $2.1 trillion by the fiscal year's end.
The Interest Burden and the Debt-to-GDP Trap
The CBO data paints a concerning picture of current imbalances, with the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio hovering at 122%, according to the St. Louis Fed. Economists warn that this asymmetry could eventually force lenders to demand higher risk premiums, further exacerbating the interest burden.
Washington’s Tokyo Gambit: Defending the Top Creditor
Overshadowed by the fiscal report but strategically vital is the move by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to backstop the Japanese yen. Confirming an intervention estimated between $5 and $10 billion, the Treasury aims to stabilize the regional currency. This maneuver is less about charity and more about protecting the U.S.'s largest creditor.
From a geopolitical risk and European markets standpoint, Washington's overt intervention in Tokyo reveals a critical vulnerability. The rising cost of U.S. debt service threatens to keep global financing rates elevated, indirectly pressuring the Eurozone. Japan's continued holding of U.S. debt is a linchpin of global financial stability, yet this dependency creates a strategic leverage point for Tokyo that could constrain U.S. options in future trade or currency conflicts.
