Nvidia ve Meta gibi devlerin gölgesinde kalan ama yapay zeka ekosisteminin en kritik bileşeni olan enerji altyapısı, Wall Street'in yeni odak noktası
Lurking in the shadows of AI hyperscalers like Nvidia and Meta lies the most critical component of the ecosystem: energy infrastructure, which is becoming Wall Street's new focal point. Vistra, one of the leading US power generators, is unveiling its capacity expansion moves to meet surging data center demand today, while rival Constellation Energy boosted its full-year forecast after reporting $7.5 billion in second-quarter sales, whetting the market's appetite for energy stocks.
The Grid's Breaking Point and the 2035 Deficit
US power use is expected to keep notching record highs in 2026 and 2027, with data centers projected to consume up to a fifth of the country's total electricity by 2035, up from roughly 6% today. In states with higher data center density, such as Texas, this pressure is felt even more acutely. Considering that the current grid capacity can only increase by about 7 gigawatts annually, projections by BloombergNEF analysts indicating a 19-gigawatt shortfall by 2035 sound alarm bells for energy supply security.Forging Alliances in Nuclear and Gas
To bridge this growing gap, tech giants and energy companies are turning to natural gas and nuclear options. Earlier this year, Vistra struck a deal to buy Cogentrix Energy and its 10 gas-fired power plants for $4.7 billion. Additionally, the company reached a 20-year agreement that will see Meta purchase power from some of Vistra's nuclear plants. Similarly, Constellation Energy has forged deals to supply nuclear power to Meta and Microsoft, announcing plans to restart the Three Mile Island plant—the site of the worst nuclear meltdown in US history—to power Microsoft. The Lag of Physical Reality
As AI's demand continues to outpace providers' ability to meet it, the strain on the grid is likely to push electricity prices higher. When explaining Vistra's projections for increasing power supply, President and CEO Jim Burke hedged investors' expectations this spring, noting, "The physical world takes much longer to develop than what people might imagine it takes," highlighting the widening gap between the speed of the digital world and the construction pace of physical infrastructure. While markets are accustomed to the speed of software, this lag in physical infrastructure could lead to a valuation repricing in utility stocks and upward pressure on the volatility index (VIX) due to supply constraints in the medium term. Beyond the AI bubble debate, this reality renders energy producers a strategic necessity.
