The U.K.’s financial watchdog is preparing rules for tokenized gold as part of a broader digital asset strategy designed to ensure London maintains its status as the top global hub for the trade of the precious metal.
Defending the Crown Jewels of Global Finance
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has approached financial institutions to explore tokenized gold regulations, aiming to foster market growth according to a report by the Financial Times. London’s over-the-counter (OTC) market has historically ranked as the number one center for gold trade, currently accounting for 70% of the world's notional trading volume, per the World Gold Council. However, this dominance is facing an increasingly stiff challenge from China.A £33 Billion Digital Gamble
Tokenization of gold involves creating digital tokens to represent ownership rights in physical gold, with the issuer holding the asset as backing. The FCA, seeking feedback on the role of tokenized gold as collateral in wholesale markets, expects to announce progress on drafting new rules within the next few months. This move aligns with a 12-month plan laid out by Chris Woolard, the U.K. Treasury's wholesale digital markets lead, which projects that digitizing financial markets could boost annual economic output by £33 billion ($44 billion).Reshaping Asset Settlement
The regulator and the Bank of England previously revealed plans for modernization in May. "Tokenization has the potential to transform wholesale markets – reshaping how assets are issued, traded and settled," stated Simon Walls, executive director of markets at the FCA. The initiative underscores a critical shift in how traditional assets interact with modern financial infrastructure. From a tokenomics perspective, this is a pivotal validation of Real World Assets (RWAs). By tokenizing gold, the U.K. is attempting to unlock illiquid value streams and reduce settlement friction. However, the success of this initiative hinges on the regulatory clarity regarding custodial risks and interoperability. If the FCA creates a walled garden rather than an open standard, liquidity will remain fragmented, failing to challenge the emerging decentralized alternatives.
