Phillips 66 (PSX): How the Energy Sector's 'Split-Margin' Phenomenon Creates Investment Opportunities?

The energy sector in 2026 is grappling with a 'split-margin' phenomenon. While refining margins are significantly higher than typical mid-cycle levels, the chemical sector is only now recovering from some of its lowest margins in years. Phillips 66 (PSX) is one of the rare companies positioned at the intersection of three distinct cycles: refining, chemicals, and renewable diesel. In Q1, the refining business saw a 48% increase in realized refining margin to $10.11 per barrel, with capacity utilization rising to 95%. This turned a $937 million loss in Q1 2025 into a $208 million profit. Jefferies forecasts Q2 2026 EPS at $7.55, while the debt-to-capital ratio has climbed to 48%. Investors are watching closely as the company navigates this triple-margin play, but concerns over leverage remain.
Phillips 66's triple-margin strategy offers a unique opportunity to capitalize on the energy sector's 'split-margin' dynamics. Investors should weigh the leverage risks carefully as they consider this potential play.
