Anduril Founder Palmer Luckey: China is Leaving the US Behind in Higher Education

Anduril founder Palmer Luckey believes the real competition between the US and China isn't just about technology, but about who is training the world's best students. The 33-year-old defense tech leader argued that American universities have drifted away from teaching practical skills, leaving China with a growing advantage that goes beyond cheap labor. Luckey pointed to China's growing bench of technical expertise, adding that the Asian nation now has many of the world's best battery engineers, metallurgists, and optical engineers. The US, on the other hand, has conceded to training people to become what he calls 'architecture astronauts.' Luckey cited Apple as an example of the broader shift, where the company designs its products in Cupertino, California, but relies heavily on manufacturing partners in China, shifting engineering and manufacturing expertise overseas. While Luckey argued that China has long been a production powerhouse, the US still holds one advantage: cultivating entrepreneurs willing to pursue unconventional ideas. China's educational system, he said, doesn't generate many 'queen bees,' but rather a lot of 'worker bees.' Luckey's own career is an example of the kind of unconventional path the American system still has the upper hand on. He began building prototypes for virtual reality headsets while being homeschooled in California and later dropped out of college at 19 to focus on Oculus, a virtual reality startup he had been developing as a teenager. Luckey sold Oculus to Facebook in 2014 for $2 billion and three years later founded Anduril, now valued at $61 billion. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla also warned that Western universities risk falling behind as China dramatically accelerates its research output. China's gains have been fueled by a deliberate reshaping of its education system, with a focus on areas like AI, robotics, and semiconductor engineering. The push is beginning even beyond college, with Beijing's primary and secondary schools offering AI instruction each academic year. This approach, some US executives argue, is one that America can't afford to ignore. 'The Rise of China in Higher Education: What Does it Mean for the US and the West?' is a question that may hold the key to the future of global leadership and innovation.
