Turkey’s Strategic Pivot: Erasing the $100 Billion Energy Import Burden

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar has formalized a comprehensive roadmap aimed at minimizing the country's dependency on imports and relieving the economy of the annual $100 billion energy import burden. Addressing the Bosphorus Diplomacy Forum, the announcement highlights that critical infrastructure investments are accelerating to balance the current account deficit and render Turkey's growth strategy more resilient against external shocks amidst global energy crises and geopolitical risks.

Geopolitical Risk Mitigation and Supply Security

Minister Bayraktar emphasized that the fragility of global supply chains heightens the urgency of transitioning to local resources, noting that tensions stemming from Iran threaten energy flows via the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that while only 10% of Turkey's energy supply currently passes through this critical route—providing a temporary buffer—complete elimination of this dependency is necessary for sustainable economic security.
  • $100 Billion Import Bill: Targeting the pressure on the current account deficit caused by the energy bill paid in 2022.
  • Geopolitical Buffer: Increasing resilience against Hormuz crises and ensuring supply security through national capabilities.
  • Local and Renewable Focus: Meeting the surge in electricity demand through local resources, nuclear energy, and efficiency projects.
  • Production Surge and Game-Changing Projects

To ensure energy supply security, the commissioning processes of mega projects termed "game-changers," such as Gabar, the Sakarya Gas Field, and the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, are being accelerated. Minister Bayraktar signaled that natural gas production in the Black Sea will double by the end of the year, a step that could lower imported gas costs and alleviate inflationary pressures.
  • Sakarya Gas Field: The Osmangazi platform moving to its location to double production by year-end.
  • Akkuyu Nuclear: Commencement of electricity generation in the first reactor in the coming months, realizing a 70-year dream.
  • Future Technologies: Efficiency gains through Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and AI-driven energy management.
  • Volatility in energy imports remains one of the most significant exogenous variables in our inflation regression models. The internalization of the $100 billion import burden, as highlighted by Minister Bayraktar, removes structural pressure on the current account, potentially meaningfully lowering Turkey's risk premium (CDS) and inflation expectations. The integration of local gas and nuclear energy will minimize the "surprise index" in energy prices, serving as the cornerstone for macroeconomic stability.
