Memecoin Frenzy Ends as Bitcoin and Institutions Crush the Meme Coin Craze

The institutionalization of crypto markets has dealt a fatal blow to the memecoin frenzy. The combined market cap of DOGE and SHIB has plummeted to $13.27 billion, the lowest in three years and down 2% this month alone. Against Bitcoin's $1.30 trillion market cap, this duo's ratio now stands at just 1.02%, a dramatic drop from the 7% peak in 2021. Bitcoin's growth means memecoins haven't just lost value in dollar terms—they've ceded ground to the very asset that defines the crypto cycle. The introduction of U.S. Bitcoin ETFs in 2024 attracted institutional investors focused on macro assets rather than memecoins. Binance retained ~55% of user funds and ~24% of spot market share, with net inflows in early July. Expert note: This trend signals a more disciplined era for crypto. Rather than waiting for memecoins to rebound, investors may be better served focusing on Bitcoin and other major market sectors.
