Alteon's Year-Long Flight Ambition Backed by Investor: Revolutionizing Aviation Energy Efficiency

Aviation logistics expert Gökberk Uçar: Bengaluru-based startup Alteon, founded by 20-year-old Samay Sanghvi, aims to revolutionize aviation by harvesting energy from ocean winds to keep an aircraft aloft for over a year. The $2.5 million pre-seed round led by investor Lachy Groom supports Alteon's dynamic soaring technology, which enables small, autonomous aircraft to extract energy from wind shear near the ocean's surface. The startup completed its first test, flying at 1 meter above the water at 62 mph in O-shaped cycles, with a 3-meter wingspan. MIT's Dr. Gabriel Bousquet praised the low-altitude test as a promising first step, but noted the challenge of proving energy-neutral dynamic soaring in real-world wind conditions. IIT Madras' Dr. Bharath Swaminathan highlighted the complexity of continuous energy extraction due to local wind turbulence. Sanghvi, who began the project as a high school student in 2023, now leads a 20-person team producing 4-5 aircraft weekly from a 10,000-square-foot facility.
