Laser Digital Secures Japan’s First Crypto Exchange License in 4 Years

Nomura Group’s digital asset subsidiary, Laser Digital, has secured Japan’s first crypto exchange license in four years, marking a significant milestone in the country’s evolving crypto market. The authorization, granted under Japan’s Payment Services Act (PSA), follows the July parliamentary revisions that classify crypto assets as financial instruments under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act (FIEA). This regulatory shift will shift crypto oversight from the PSA to FIEA, introducing stricter regulations, including insider trading rules, for crypto businesses. Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama emphasized the government’s intent to bring crypto under traditional financial regulation, ensuring citizens benefit from digital and blockchain-based assets. Laser Digital’s CEO, Jez Mohideen, highlighted the firm’s focus on expanding into institutional crypto trading after securing domestic liquidity provision. The development comes as Japan’s crypto market enters a ‘new phase of maturity,’ with increasing institutional interest in the asset class.
