HaberTürk Executive Mehmet Akif Ersoy Faces Up to 266 Years in Prison in Drug-Sex Scandal

The Istanbul 19th Heavy Penal Court has demanded up to 266 years in prison for Mehmet Akif Ersoy, the leader of a drug and sexual abuse conspiracy. Ersoy, along with 12 others, is accused of organizing parties where women were forced to use drugs, facilitating cocaine trafficking, and committing sexual assaults systematically. The indictment alleges Ersoy used his influence at HaberTürk to control the group, which included close friends and work associates. The court decided to re-evaluate the indictment after addressing deficiencies. Ten additional suspects were referred for separate investigations. Ersoy faces between 11 and 27.5 years in prison, while other defendants were sentenced between 7 and 15 years. This case reflects Turkey's ongoing efforts to combat drug and sexual crime organizations.
Markets may react to such scandals by eroding trust in media and judicial systems. Ersoy's position at HaberTürk and the scale of the conspiracy could force a reevaluation of media ethics.
