Margin Erosion Under Aggressive Expansion: Migros Reports Unexpected Q2 Loss

Retail giant Migros posted a shocking net loss of 699 million TRY in the second quarter of 2026, defying the market consensus of a 407 million TRY net profit. This unexpected deficit highlights the growing tension between aggressive physical store expansion and soaring operational costs.

Margins Squeezed by Inflation Accounting and Personnel Costs

Although the company generated 124.4 billion TRY in revenue, it fell short of the analyst consensus of 126.1 billion TRY. Under the pressure of IAS 29 inflation accounting, key profitability metrics showed a significant decline:

  • EBITDA Margin Drop: EBITDA margin contracted to 4.3% from 5.4% in the same period last year.
  • Gross Profit Margin Decline: Gross margin fell from 23.9% to 22.7%, driven by distribution center wage hikes and intense promotional campaigns.
  • EBITDA Performance: EBITDA landed at 5.3 billion TRY, missing the market expectation of 6.4 billion TRY.
  • Debt Burden: Total financial debt, including IFRS 16 lease liabilities, reached 39 billion TRY.
  • Unchecked Store Expansion Versus Distribution Cost Pressures

Migros opened 64 new stores in Q2, bringing its total network to 3,830 locations. However, this massive physical footprint has intensified distribution center personnel costs and promotional expenses, eroding overall profitability. While Migros Group CEO Özgür Tort maintained that the company's profitable growth focus remains intact, the sustainability of this model under current macroeconomic headwinds remains highly questionable.

Zeynep Turan's Analysis: The unchecked physical expansion of retail giants and their rising operational costs ultimately create a hidden inflationary pressure passed directly to the consumer. Households, already crushed under extortionate bank loan rates and brutal credit card limit restrictions, are being pacified with promotional illusions. Who can guarantee that corporations with a 39 billion TRY debt burden won't pass these soaring borrowing costs down to consumers, much like banks do with high-interest consumer loans? While banks exploit the public with high interest rates, retail giants pass the bill of their operational inefficiencies onto the shelves. In this vicious cycle, the cash-strapped consumer is always the one left paying the price.
