MLS Overhauls Playoff Format to Boost TV Revenue
Major League Soccer (MLS), Apple TV ile olan sözleşmesinin 2029'da sona ermesinden önce, playoff formatını yenilemek için kapsamlı bir revizyon planı

Major League Soccer (MLS) is reportedly overhauling its playoff format ahead of the expiration of its Apple TV contract in 2029. The new system would replace the current Eastern and Western conferences with a single table and five geographically aligned divisions. The postseason would expand to 20 teams (up from 18) and feature a double-elimination tournament running from late April to May. Inspired by the Australian Football League (AFL) model, the new format would include a wildcard round with eight teams advancing to the final four. MLS aims to boost fan engagement and secure more lucrative TV rights deals, though concerns remain about the regular season's relevance. This overhaul comes amid MLS's 2025 MLS Cup champion Inter Miami CF and the massive interest generated by the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the U.S. The current $250 million Apple TV deal could rise to $450 million or more, aligning MLS with the Premier League's model.
The restructuring reflects MLS's strategic pivot to capitalize on growing soccer interest and financial opportunities, positioning itself as a key player in U.S. sports media.
