TikTok's Deadly Algorithm Experiment: Company Faces Scrutiny After Teenager's Death
ABD senatörleri Marsha Blackburn ve Richard Blumenthal, TikTok'un 15 milyon ABD kullanıcısına yönelik bir algoritma deneyinde kritik bir güvenlik özel

US Senators Marsha Blackburn and Richard Blumenthal have uncovered a confidential document revealing that TikTok intentionally disabled a critical safety feature for approximately 15 million US users, including 16-year-old Chase Nasca, who later died by suicide. The senators, who have been pushing for child safety legislation, accused the company of 'depraved' behavior by prioritizing financial metrics over user safety. The document, obtained in litigation, details how TikTok turned off an algorithmic safeguard designed to break up harmful content echo chambers for 10% of US users. Chase's account was fed thousands of videos about depression and suicide before his death. TikTok claims the decision was a 'delicate balance' between safety and measuring impact on daily active users. The senators demanded answers on employee involvement, the reason for including minors, and a full unredacted version of the document. TikTok has not responded to the letter but reaffirmed its commitment to user safety. Blackburn called the experiment 'inconceivable,' highlighting how social media platforms 'use children as products.' The incident has reignited calls for stricter child safety laws, with Blackburn's Kids Online Safety Act and Bilirakis' KIDS Act being reintroduced.
The senators warn that such experiments could 'pose risks to markets,' emphasizing the need for platforms to prioritize safety over engagement metrics. TikTok's failure to exercise reasonable care in preventing mental health harms reflects a broader industry issue requiring stricter regulations.
