Synchrony Partners with OpenAI to Enable Direct Shopping in ChatGPT: How Markets Will React

Synchrony Financial, the credit card issuer for brands like Amazon, Walmart, and Lowe's, has launched a partnership with OpenAI to enable direct shopping inside ChatGPT. This marks one of the first major moves by a U.S. consumer lender to integrate financing, payments, and rewards directly into an AI chatbot. OpenAI is working with companies like Visa and Stripe to develop 'agentic commerce,' allowing users to discover and purchase products directly within ChatGPT. However, Synchrony's chief strategy officer, Maran Nalluswami, noted that transactions must be seamlessly completed within the ecosystem, ensuring that cards are properly loaded to facilitate purchases. Nalluswami also mentioned that integrating general-purpose cards into ChatGPT will take 6-12 months, while private-label cards for specific retailers will require additional coordination. Consumer trust in AI-driven purchases remains a concern, along with questions about fee allocation for transactions completed inside ChatGPT. Synchrony is also exploring partnerships with competing AI platforms like Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini to embed its cards within those chatbots. Additionally, the company is launching a ChatGPT plugin to help consumers browse its marketplace deals and promotional financing, while deploying OpenAI's latest models internally to accelerate product development. These moves come as OpenAI prepares for its potential IPO, adding pressure to turn ChatGPT into a broader platform for online commerce.
