Italian Dominance and $162 Million Import Bill: Turkey's Sunglasses Market

Turkey's eyewear sector, a critical retail item merging eye health with aesthetics, has maintained an import-heavy trajectory in the first half of the year, with high-value Italian brands continuing their dominance over the market. Despite local manufacturers holding ground in the entry and mid-segments, domestic demand depth and brand perception have shaped the foreign trade balance in favor of imports.

Italian Market Dominance and Import Costs

Data from the Turkish Statistical Institute for the first six months of the year clearly outlines the country's dependency on foreign sources in this sector and consumption preferences:

  • Total imports reached $162 million, with the number of imported sunglasses reaching 4 million 244,420 pairs.
  • Italy holds the largest share of imports by a significant margin, with $87.8 million paid to the country.
  • While 1 million 473,111 pairs arrived from Italy, the amount paid was more than double the total amount paid to China.
  • China, the second-largest supplier, sent 1 million 815,670 pairs, costing $41.6 million.
  • Other key suppliers included Thailand ($10.6 million), Japan ($6.7 million), and France ($6.4 million).
  • Export Trajectory: Expanding Networks from Europe to the Gulf

Despite the high volume on the import side, Turkish exporters continue to diversify their strategies geographically. The most striking data point is that the largest trading partner remains Italy:

  • The highest export volume was made to Italy; $3.6 million in revenue was generated from the sale of 51,246 pairs between January and June.
  • The TRNC was the second-largest market, generating $1.4 million from the export of 16,765 pairs.
  • The Gulf region showed growing interest in Turkish sunglasses; Saudi Arabia ($337,600) and United Arab Emirates ($332,800) were prominent destinations.
  • Exports to Azerbaijan amounted to $309,200, while Russia saw $216,500 worth of exports.
  • Manufacturing Base: Strength in Injection Moves into Acetate

On the supply side, data from the Turkish Opticians Association provides critical insights into the industry's capacity and technology level. Turkey's geographical location is considered an advantage despite global supply chain disruptions:

  • Approximately 60 factories operate in Turkey, with 45 possessing qualified production capacity.
  • Turkey is competitive with China in injection molding production, yet lacks high-level processes in metal frame manufacturing.
  • Acetate (natural cellulose fibers) production, defined as high-quality, has just started in Turkey and is currently carried out by a few firms.
  • Due to production technology, acetate is not suitable for mass production like injection, necessitating a focus on niche and premium markets.
  • Data analysis reveals that the unit price of imports from Italy (approx. $60) is nearly three times that of imports from China (approx. $23). This clearly indicates a shift by Turkish consumers towards prestige and the luxury segment, rather than just basic eye health. While local production's ability to compete with China in injection molding offers positive volatility, closing the technological gap in high-margin areas like acetate and metal frames emerges as a critical data point for alleviating pressure on the current account deficit.
