Chinese-owned AESC has been forced to push back its ramp-up plans due to lower-than-expected demand from Nissan and the lack of a formal commitment from JLR, signaling a broader retreat from ambitious electrification targets.
JLR Deal Collapse and Production Stagnation
Despite being situated next door to Nissan’s Sunderland plant, AESC has paused the installation of a third manufacturing line. This stall is directly attributed to JLR’s reluctance to make formal financial commitments and disputes over the cost and timing of battery supplies, leaving the UK’s largest automotive employer scrambling for alternatives.
The Wider Crisis in European Battery Manufacturing
This delay is part of a devastating trend sweeping across the UK and Europe, where battery manufacturers are facing a "difficult few years." As carmakers retreat from internal combustion engine phase-outs, the industry is being outpaced by Chinese giants like CATL and BYD.
Logistical Hurdles and Future Projections
The halt in expansion impacts not just output but the massive logistics required to build these facilities. An industry executive recently highlighted that 1,000 shipping containers are needed just to transport equipment for a single assembly line. AESC has revised its annual capacity target from an aspirational 38 GWh to a more realistic 15.8 GWh (enough for about 300,000 cars).
From a maritime economics perspective, analyzing this through the lens of the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) and commodity supply shocks, the suspension of factory expansions is a harbinger for shipping volumes. The cancellation of equipment shipments—requiring up to 1,000 containers per line—creates an immediate drag on freight demand. The deceleration in the EV transition reduces the immediate pressure on the supply chain for critical minerals like lithium and cobalt, potentially softening freight rates in the short term. However, the long-term outlook for energy storage remains a buoy for the sector. The current inertia highlights the fragility of just-in-time supply chains when faced with financing gaps and shifting geopolitical winds.
