The Tax Audit Authority (VDK) intensified its crackdown on the informal economy in the first half of 2026, uncovering a total 354.2 billion TL in tax base gaps and reduced losses—a 57% increase over the same period last year.

A Direct Hit on the Shadow Economy: Gap Figures

■265.2 billion TL tax base gap surged 96.65% year‑on‑year.

■Assessed tax rose 89.35%, penalties 79.92%, together exceeding 186.6 billion TL.

■33,455 taxpayers inspected, generating 101,301 reports in the first six months.

Voluntary Compliance Engine: Invitation‑to‑Explain Mechanism

■Taxpayers’ self‑review added 35.4 billion TL to the tax base; the extra tax collected rose 10.41% to 3.05 billion TL.

■Although the base increase from invitations fell 16.24%, the additional tax still posted double‑digit growth.

■The April‑launched filing‑monitoring program reached 36,015 taxpayers, prompting a 21.8 billion TL base increase and a 23.3 billion TL reduction in reported losses.

■Field checks covered luxury restaurants, staple foods, diamonds, printing, medical devices, textiles, tobacco and 15 other sectors.
