Banking Bleeds While Oil Soars: 771 Million TRY Capital Outflow in July

July signals a strategic shift in the portfolios of foreign investors on Borsa Istanbul. Capital movements clearly indicate an accelerated exit from the banking sector and a deepening inclination towards industrial stocks. Beneath the total transaction volume of 4.562 trillion 17 million TRY by foreigners throughout the month lie dynamics of exiting banking stocks and entering energy giants.

July's Financial Balance Sheet and Net Capital Flow

The movements of foreign investors on BIST reveal a nearly balanced buy-sell equilibrium, though the final tally shows a net outflow. The data suggests that portfolio managers are adopting a cautious stance.
  • Total purchase volume: 2 trillion 280 billion 623 million TRY
  • Total sales volume: 2 trillion 281 billion 394 million TRY
  • Net capital outflow: 771 million 429 thousand TRY
  • This net outflow indicates that foreign capital is managing risk through selective stock preferences and short-term positioning in Turkish markets.

Demand for Industrial Giants: Tüpraş at the Peak

On the buying side, foreign preferences point to a specific sectoral concentration. Energy and holding giants stand out as safe havens for foreign capital.
  • TUPRS: With 13.69 billion TRY, it became the most bought stock, reaffirming confidence in the oil refinery sector.
  • KCHOL, THYAO, and BIMAS: Purchase volumes in these three stocks exceeded 5 billion TRY.
  • TEHOL: Ranked fifth with 3.33 billion TRY, solidifying interest in aviation logistics.
  • The list was followed by KRDMD, MGROS, TCELL, TRHOL, IEYHO, GUBRF, AEFES, PEKGY, TTKOM, and EUPWR.
  • Heavy Selling Pressure in the Banking Sector

The sell-side picture is entirely a banking exit. Foreign investors undertook a serious portfolio reduction across the sector, particularly in public banks.
  • YKBNK: Took the top spot with 14.57 billion TRY in sales volume and 411.4 million nominal shares sold.
  • AKBNK: Became the second most sold stock with 7.95 billion TRY.
  • Other selling leaders: ASELS (5.67 billion TRY), BIGEN (3.78 billion TRY), and ASTOR (3.26 billion TRY).
  • Sector-wise, GARAN, ISCTR, and VAKBN were also among the banking stocks under heavy selling pressure.
  • The intense selling pressure on banking stocks indicates foreign investors are cautious about the projected profitability cycle of Turkish banking, given the compression in credit margins and macroprudential measures. In a period where commercial credit growth is slowing, the shift of funds to export-oriented and forex-generating industrial companies (Tüpraş, THY) signals a natural hedge search against currency risk. This rotation represents a repricing of "risk premium" on a sectoral basis.
