Australia's Regulatory Hammer Silences 96 Crypto ATMs

Australia's financial crime watchdog, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), has taken decisive action by suspending crypto ATM operator Cryptolink Pty Ltd for three months, effectively forcing the shutdown of 96 machines across the nation.

Operational Halt Over Money Laundering Fears

The suspension, effective August 9, strips Cryptolink of its ability to provide virtual asset services for the duration of the order. Crypto ATMs, which serve as a critical bridge allowing customers to purchase cryptocurrency with cash, have been flagged by AUSTRAC as potential weak points. The regulator maintains serious concerns regarding the operator's capacity to manage transactions that carry a heightened risk of money laundering or terrorism financing.

Compliance Failures and Financial Penalties

Although Cryptolink initially met the terms of an enforceable undertaking imposed in October 2025, the company subsequently faltered in its regulatory obligations. Key failures cited by the regulator include:

This suspension follows a broader investigation by AUSTRAC's Cryptocurrency Taskforce into alleged breaches of anti-money laundering rules. In a move to tighten the sector, the regulator set a 5,000 Australian-dollar limit on cash deposits and withdrawals in June, mandating stronger customer checks, scam warnings, and enhanced transaction monitoring. Thomas signaled that AUSTRAC will continue to monitor the sector closely and will not hesitate to act against other crypto ATM businesses where serious risks are identified.

From a blockchain research perspective, the Cryptolink suspension highlights the inherent friction between physical cash gateways and digital asset compliance. Cash is inherently anonymous, while blockchains are transparent; bridging the two requires rigorous, automated identity verification layers.
