BT Cashes in on Copper Boom: AI Frenzy Drives £2bn+ Windfall from Recycled Metal
BT, AI ve yenilenebilir enerji patlamasıyla bakır fiyatlarının 10 katına çıkmasıyla 2024'te 105 milyon sterlin ve 2025'te 99 milyon sterlin ödeme aldı

BT is on track to pocket over £2 billion from selling surplus copper cabling, with £105m and £99m paid in 2024 and 2025 respectively. The telecom giant recovered 9,147 tonnes of copper in 2024, bringing its total haul since 2023 to 22,347 tonnes. Copper prices surged to $14,294/tonne in late 2024, amid S&P Global's forecast of demand doubling to 50 million tonnes by 2035. BT signed a four-year deal with EMR for 20,000 tonnes, but its total value could exceed £2bn at current prices. Openreach is deploying anti-theft measures like SelectaDNA, but still faces a potential 200,000-tonne copper recovery opportunity.
The surge in copper's strategic value signals a new supply shock in commodities. Markets must assess the potential for supply shortages as demand is projected to double by 2035.
