Why Lowe's Investors Remain Bullish Despite Housing Market Deadlock

Why Lowe's Investors Remain Bullish Despite Housing Market Deadlock

North Carolina-based retail giant Lowe's Companies, Inc. (LOW) has lagged behind general market performance over the past year, yet leading analysts on Wall Street paint a cautiously optimistic picture for the company's future. While the company's shares have declined by 14.9% over the last twelve months, the S&P 500 Index rallied nearly 20.6% during the same period. Nevertheless, despite a 9.5% drop since the beginning of 2026, strong balance sheet figures and analyst recommendations keep the stock on investors' radars.

The Blow of the Mortgage Crisis to the Retail Giant

The downward trajectory in Lowe's stock performance stems largely from harsh macroeconomic headwinds. The company is directly impacted by mortgage rates sitting at their highest levels in decades.

  • High interest rates have frozen home sales, significantly cutting demand for pre-sale and post-purchase renovations.

  • Amid shifting consumer spending, retail customers have pulled back on discretionary 'DIY' (Do It Yourself) projects.

  • Lowe's, having more exposure to individual consumers than its pro-focused rival The Home Depot, is bearing the brunt of this spending cut.
  • Financial Results Beating Expectations and Future Projections

First-quarter results announced in May demonstrated a performance exceeding market expectations, providing some relief to investors. The company's operational efficiency and revenue structure proved resilient against tough market conditions.

  • Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $3.03, beating Wall Street expectations of $2.96.

  • The company's total revenue was $23.1 billion, surpassing analyst forecasts of $22.9 billion.

  • Lowe's expects full-year adjusted EPS in the range of $12.25 to $12.75, with revenue projected between $92 billion and $94 billion.
  • Wall Street's 'Moderate Buy' Consensus

The consensus formed by 29 analysts covering the stock leans towards 'Moderate Buy' for Lowe's. This configuration indicates a more bullish approach compared to three months ago.

  • 19 analysts rate the stock as a 'Strong Buy', while one suggests 'Moderate Buy'.

  • Eight analysts rate the stock a 'Hold', while only one issues a 'Strong Sell' rating.

  • The current setup marks a slight increase from the 18 'Strong Buy' ratings three months ago, signaling maintained confidence.
  • From my perspective as an aviation and cargo logistics expert, the stagnation at Lowe's creates an indirect cooling effect on air cargo demand. The decline in home renovation and construction material requests reduces air bridge shipments for heavy and volumetric cargo (appliances, furniture). As consumers retreat from DIY projects, retail chains slow down their stock replenishment rates, which I observe creates pressure on the operational margins of cargo airlines in this segment. However, should there be an easing in interest rates, we could see a sudden surge in demand hitting the logistics side.
