Cruise Tourism Surge in Turkey: Record 756K Passengers in First Half

Turkey's cruise tourism performance is gaining momentum beyond the post-pandemic recovery, with annual growth rates exceeding 30%. According to data from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, 756,455 passengers arrived via cruise ships in the first six months of this year, marking a %300 increase compared to the thousands recorded in 2020-2021.

Recovery from Pandemic Lows

  • Passenger count rose from thousands in 2020-2021 to 255,817 in 2022
  • 482,925 in 2023 and 574,509 in 2024 showed steady growth
  • 3.3% increase from last year's 732,302 passengers
  • Set a 16-year record for cruise arrivals
  • Kuşadası's Cruise Dominance

  • 204 ships visited Kuşadası Port Authority, leading all destinations
  • Istanbul (93 ships), Bodrum (36), Çeşme (27), and Marmaris (20) followed
  • Total of 488 ships visited Turkish ports
  • Hakan Çelik Analysis: Cruise tourism is a critical economic lever for Turkey, but its impact on employment and services remains underutilized. Strategic investments in infrastructure and tax incentives are essential to sustain this growth. Expanding port capacities in hubs like Istanbul could enhance resilience against short-term volatility.
