Nvidia announced Monday it will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, a data center developer linked to SoftBank and OpenAI. The investment ensures Nvidia will be the sole supplier of compute infrastructure at OpenAI's Ports-Pike data center near Cincinnati, Ohio. Nvidia will also provide up to $105 billion in credit to help build the facility, which could scale from an initial 4.25 gigawatts to 8 gigawatts. SB Energy's existing investors include SoftBank and OpenAI. The data center and power developer will build a 9.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant on the site, which was previously used for uranium enrichment. The power plant is expected to cost $33 billion, reflecting a 66% increase in natural gas plant costs over the past two years. Once completed, these facilities will compete for natural gas with export markets, potentially tripling prices in some regions. This move by Nvidia is seen as a strategic step to address energy demands in the AI sector.
This investment could position Nvidia as a key player in both technology and energy infrastructure, particularly as AI-driven data centers continue to expand. The long-term credit facility also underscores the company's commitment to supporting the growth of AI infrastructure.
