Profit Bleeding in Global Auto: Per-Vehicle Earnings Hit Historic Low

The global automotive industry is confronting an unexpected profitability crisis in the first half of 2026. Research by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM), reported by Der Spiegel, reveals that while sector giants are managing to sustain revenues, they are struggling significantly to maintain operating profitability.

The Widening Chasm Between Revenue and Profit

Key sector indicators clearly demonstrate the dramatic weakening in manufacturers' ability to convert income into profit. Data from the 15 major manufacturers included in the study paints the following picture:
  • The average earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) per vehicle declined from 1,409 euros in the same period last year to 1,187 euros.
  • Total EBIT fell by 17.5% year-over-year to reach 35.6 billion euros.
  • The total revenue drop remaining at just 1.4% proves that the issue lies not in sales volume, but in operational efficiency.
  • Sacrificing Margins for Market Share

The analysis, featuring giants such as Toyota, Volkswagen Group, Hyundai-Kia, Stellantis (including Leapmotor International), General Motors, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Tesla, highlights the concerning magnitude of profit erosion. Stefan Bratzel, who led the CAM study, emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that the divergence between revenue and operating profit is the primary alarm signal for the first half of the year. "If the rate of decline in EBIT exceeds that of revenue by 12 times, the sector is losing profitability before it loses market share," Bratzel warned.
The automotive industry is currently navigating the most costly "valley of death" period in the transition between classic Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and Electric Vehicles (EVs). Battery costs not yet reaching desired levels and aggressive price wars by Chinese manufacturers are eroding the margins of Western-centric giants. The drop in profit per vehicle to 1,187 euros is not merely a cost issue but a crisis in monetizing high-value technology. Manufacturers are sacrificing operational excellence for market share by entering discount wars.
