U.S. Imposes Record Tariffs on Drone Imports

The United States has erected a new trade barrier on unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and components, citing national security concerns and levying ad valorem duties up to 100%.

The U.S. New Drone Tariff Playbook

The White House announced that drones over 25 kg and those equipped with thermal imaging, along with their ground stations and critical parts, will face a 100% duty. Smaller, less sensitive devices will be taxed at 25%.

Regional Rates and Tiered Structure

■15% duty applies to UAS and components from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan.

■10% duty is set for UAS originating from the United Kingdom.

■The tariffs become effective 21 days after signing, on September 3, while less‑sensitive components will be phased in after 180 days.

Investment Incentives and Domestic Production

The U.S. Department of Commerce has been granted authority to create a stimulus program for firms that invest in domestic UAS manufacturing, aiming to fortify the supply chain and boost home‑grown capabilities.

Markets anticipate that these duties will tighten European and Asian suppliers' access to the U.S. market in the short term while bolstering the competitive edge of domestic manufacturers.
