The Turkish Ministry of Trade has launched its first major wave of sanctions under the Electronic Advertisement Verification System (EİDS), aiming to curb unregistered and speculative activities conducted via digital platforms in the real estate and automotive sectors. These audits, targeting businesses manipulating market prices through unauthorized and fake listings on social media, mark a new front in the quest for transparency in public finance.
The End of the "Unverified" Era on Social Media
The EİDS, which mandates identity and authorization verification for electronically published listings, now covers not only traditional listing sites but also social media giants like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. The Ministry has made it compulsory to share the system-verified listing link in all real estate and vehicle advertisements posted on social media. This step aims to record unregistered commerce by clearing grey areas on digital platforms.
First Wave of Penalties: 8.2 Million Liras and Access Bans
As a result of rigorous audits, heavy sanctions were imposed on intermediary institutions found to be in violation of the legislation. The details of the first balance sheet, serving as a message of determination from the Ministry, are as follows:
These steps, taken to prevent tax losses in public finance and ensure market discipline, are overdue but highly critical moves. The speculative bubble in the real estate and used car markets not only victimizes consumers but also undermines our budget revenues by creating a multi-billion-lira unregistered economy. While administrative fines provide temporary deterrence, the ultimate solution lies in fully integrating the taxation and audit infrastructure of digital platforms into the public finance system. Structural reforms must be implemented without compromise across all areas of informality.
